ModernThink History

Richard Boyer and Scott Cawood, PhD founded ModernThink in February 2004.  Together, they bring over thirty years of combined workplace and organizational development expertise to the company.  Eileen Filliben Edmunds, JD/MBA joined ModernThink in 2005.  She brings her unique perspective on the business and legal advantages of proactive employee relations as well as her operational expertise in running service organizations.

Prior to founding ModernThink, Boyer consulted with companies on issues of organization culture, strategic planning, and group dynamics since 1992.  Boyer's passion for helping organizations develop their potential is complemented by his extensive experience helping individuals and teams understand workplace dynamics.  Boyer has worked with a wide range of clients from non-profit organizations and educational institutions to numerous Fortune 500 companies.  Boyer was a senior consultant at The Great Place to Work Institute, the company that selects Fortune magazine's annual list of the "100 Best Companies to Work for in America." Boyer was also associate director for professional development programs at Outward Bound, where he focused on programs that promoted managerial effectiveness, leadership development and cross-functional collaboration.  Boyer now oversees ModernThink's delivery of Client Services ranging from lists to surveys to consulting services.

Edmunds received her law and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Virginia, earning the William Michael Shermet award for being in the top 5% of her M.B.A. class.  She practiced law as a corporate governance, commercial litigation and employment law attorney, first with Willkie Farr & Gallagher in New York City and then with Potter Anderson & Corroon, LLP in Wilmington, Delaware.  She moved to the business side in a series of roles with increasing responsibility as director of quality assurance for Juniper Bank, chief operating officer for Brandywine Commercial Corp. and then founder and CEO of HR-IQ, Inc. Combining her legal background with her business acumen, Edmunds specializes in positioning clients to maximize the business and legal advantages of proactive employee relations. Her particular expertise is helping her clients navigate complex situations where business, legal and ethical issues intersect, including creating inclusive workplaces, increasing employee engagement and conducting internal investigations.  She also has proven capability working with executive teams and Boards of Directors on corporate governance and strategic planning issues, especially as they relate to human capital.  Edmunds now oversees ModernThink's business development activities as well as internal operations.

Before launching ModernThink, Cawood, who holds a PhD in business administration, was vice president of The Great Place to Work Institute. Cawood has also served as the vice president of global talent management for the Revlon Corporation as well as a human resources leader at W. L. Gore & Associates, currently number five on Fortune magazine's Best Companies list, and one of only five companies featured on the list every year since its inception.  Having moved on from his operational responsibilities at ModernThink, Cawood now serves as vice president, worldwide human resources for Synygy.  In this role, Scott is fulfilling his desire of applying his many ideas and theories of organizational development while focusing on one company.  Scott continues to provide expertise and leadership for the selection of the Best Places to Work lists with ModernThink.

Launching ModernThink, Cawood and Boyer decided to create something different, a cutting-edge business consulting firm specializing in workplace research and organization development, but with a twist. ModernThink would not just be a "me too" company analyzing "great workplaces"; it would strive to find that elusive link between creating a great workplace and enhancing business performance in the process.
