A recent survey of attorneys reported that approximately 75% would not choose the profession again, and nearly that number would not encourage their son or daughter to enter the profession. The Litigation Section of the American Bar Association ("ABA") Section of Litigation has developed an innovative Raise the Bar project designed to address head-on some of the most fundamental problems facing the profession. According to the ABA Section of Litigation, "From overworked associates to disgruntled partners, from outrageous demands on time to lack of trial opportunities, from the profit per partner competition to the uncertain path to partnership, the number of forces buffeting the profession presents the Section of Litigation a special opportunity to make a difference."

ModernThink has been selected by the ABA Section of Litigation to partner on the Raise the Bar project by spearheading the Great Law Firm Project. While still evolving, the preliminary goals of the Great Law Firm Project are as follows:

1. to deliver two survey-based self assessment tools to law firms (one for employees, the second for firm management) to assist them in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of their current workplaces;
2. to provide law firm participants with national benchmarking statistics to allow them to see how their workplaces stack up relative to other law firms of comparable size, practice areas and/or geography; and
3. to educate law firms about best practices adopted by other law firms as well as other companies nationwide.

Ultimately, the Great Law Firm Project will not only help stem the tide of discontent and turnover in the legal industry but will also help law firms return some of the appeal, promise and pride of practicing law to the profession.

All of the feedback will be provided to law firm participants in a confidential manner. ModernThink will be available to help interpret the survey and self assessment results and implement data-driven solutions to the issues and concerns raised.

ModernThink has partnered with The Chronicle of Higher Education to help you find out.The Chronicle and ModernThink have created an important new study about higher education: the first nationwide survey of Great Colleges to Work For.

The program is higher education's version of the popular Fortune magazine survey, with one key difference: It will not rank institutions.

Instead, the project is designed to recognize institutions that have built great workplaces and to compile detailed benchmarking data about trends in compensation, benefits, and other employment issues.

The project consists of two online surveys: one completed by a single human-resources representative at an institution, and one by a random sample of faculty members, administrators and professional staff on a campus.   Learn more. . .
